Our Mission

We exist to glorify God by making disciples
in our city and around the world.

Church Covenant

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God,
to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior
and, on the profession of our faith,
having been baptized in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
we do now, in the presence of God, and this assembly,
most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant
with one another as one body of Christ.

We will seek, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit,
to strive for the advancement of this church,
in knowledge, holiness and comfort;
to promote its prosperity and spirituality;
to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines;
to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry,
the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor,
and the spread of the gospel through all nations.

We will seek to maintain family and private devotions;
raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord;
and by a pure and loving example
to seek the salvation of our family and friends.

We will seek, by Divine aid, to live carefully in the world,
denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,
and remembering that, as we have been voluntarily buried by baptism
and raised again from the symbolic grave,
we have a special obligation now to lead a new and holy life.

We will seek to watch over each other in love;
to remember one another in prayer;
to aid one another in sickness and distress;
to cultivate sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech;
to be slow to take offense, but always ready
for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior
to secure it without delay.

We will, when we move from this place,
as soon as possible, unite with some other church,
where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant
and the principles of God’s Word.

Church History

Brookwood Baptist Church was organized on July 7, 1957 by a group of people who gathered in prayer asking for God’s guidance in fulfilling the need for a church in this area. At that time, Jacksonville was a small village with a population of 873. The first church meeting was held in the former VFW Hall. On the very first day, there were 118 people in Sunday school and 142 at the morning worship service. A total of 72 people became members that day.

A temporary building was erected on Richlands Avenue in order to accommodate everyone. The church bought a five acre plot of land outside the city limits on which to build the permanent church building. Little did we know then that this would be right in the heart of Jacksonville as it stands today.

The name Brookwood was selected by taking the last two syllables in Overbrook and Northwoods, the two residential areas surrounding the new church land. The pastorium was completed and occupied on December 23, 1958. Another part of the church was finished and first used on December 17, 1981.

Many marvelous and miraculous things have taken place since then. We have had many faithful servants come and go through our doors. Hundreds of people have come to know the Lord through our church’s outreach and thousands of lives have been enriched by the ministries here. God continues to work through Brookwood Baptist Church.
